What Does Reading Mean to You?

Okay.  Here's our BLOG. Here's our chance to write about and discuss our thoughts on books, poetry, our writing, the writing of published authors, articles, music, anything with words.

To get started I would like you to think about and comment on what reading means to you. Really think about it. What does reading bring to your life?  What does it truly mean to you?

  1. Putting this question into words is difficult. There is so much about reading that I just seem to feel.
Reading allows me discover other worlds beyond the borders of the world in which I live.
Reading helps my mind to quiet.
Reading gives me the information to talk to others about a shared book.
    Reading fills me with knowledge.
    Reading makes me happy.
As a kid, reading was my savior. Really.
Reading gives me another way to spend time with my son, and then gives us lots to talk about.
Reading brings me and a group of friends together once a month.
As an adult reading is my savior. Really again.
I read for pleasure, I read for information, I read to remember and sometimes to forget. I read because my mother read. I read because there are so many stories out there.

  3. I read for one for knowledge and the other is because I’m forced to .I really like books that are about Vermont. Its not that I don’t like reading it’s just that it’s not the most fun thing for me. I’m really liking books about fantasy and the books we read in groups. I’m a tad slow at reading and getting better with your help Ms.Carter. Thanks for pushing me till I like it and till i get better.

    Thanks Ms.Carter YOU ROCK!!!!!!!!!! JB

  4. I feel like reading is one of the best things Earth has bestowed upon us. Reading for me is something that saves my life. It gets me through tough times when I need to forget a moment I don’t want to remember. Reading entertains me, it enlightens me, it inspires me, and it makes me happy when I’m sad. Reading is something I love and wouldn’t give for anything. I just love how a great book sucks you into a whole world of your own imagination and immerses you inside your mind. I am not embarrassed to say that reading is one of my favorite pastimes when I have no homework to do. I don’t read a book for its moral; I read it for its story. If a book is not dripping story out of every pore and fiber of itself, I don’t like it. The characters are the best part for me. You can picture whatever you want as the character. The scenery, the items, the characters, the everything is what you think it looks like. They just follow the books descriptive string of words. My favorite genres are fiction and fantasy because they require the most imagination. Reading is my hero and always will be.

  5. I read for pleasure and for fun. I read so I can become one with the character. I gain knowledge sometimes and I gain the feeling of adventure. Unlike some people I don’t have to be forced to read. I like to read in front of the fireplace with my family. Most of what I like doing with my family is reading in various places of my house. Reading has a way of making me have many feelings. I mostly like fictional novels and humor novels. Reading comes easily to me. Eli

  6. I read because I am told to do it so I sit down and read. I feel I don’t
Gain anything from reading it really depends what I am reading. I don’t get excited at all when reading, it depends if the book is a book I might think is good or looks like the type for me. I feel that I enjoy reading more when I am being read too. TD

  7. Reading is very important to me because when I read I get cozy and read each page carefully. So that the picture in my head is clear like I am watching a movie in that reflects the setting, the characters and their movements. Its better then playing with toys or technology. I read as long as I want and instead of making my head and eyes hurt you get to watch a movie over and over as many times as you want. Or you can read books with different movies in your head. Some books will make more than one adventure in. Whenever I read a book I pretend the book is happening in front of me. Books mean the world to me. HC

  9. I love most of the books. They make me smart and tell me the facts. The most book series I like is action. Also when I read one of the mystery books I always get excited what happens at the ending. The end of action books makes me feel like a TV hero or a spy!

  13. I really like to read and here’s why. I really like to read because I like reading books that take place in the future. Another reason I like to read is because when I get bored and have nothing to do I really rally like to read until I have something to do. Reading is like taking a vacation to a tropical paradise and when you get is when you stop reading the book. I don’t care whether or not the book grabs me in the beginning. As you can see I really, really like to read and would never stop if I had the choice to.

I think your comment is very interesting because it shows both sides. You say why you don’t like reading and you give details about it. You say what you like about reading and you give us examples of what kinds of reading you like.

  16. Reading is like a house, or another world to me. I can enter the book and have a mutual connection with the character, or be the character itself. The character’s friends are mine, and the character’s feelings are mine. I never know what is going to happen next in a book so I HAVE to keep reading. Reading means I have access to anything I want. If I want to know something, I just flip a page, and BOOM, I'm smarter. I can have an adventure from my living room couch. I think reading is great, and it means a lot to me.

You are so right! You escape to a great, amazing world that is your mind. My favorite line of yours was, "I read because I can escape into my own world". It was so true and so you.

  19. I like to read diary of a wimpy kid, goose bumps, and most comedy books. I enjoy those books and many more. My favorite book I’ve read so far was the Lightning Thief. Still and really used to love to read Diary Of A Wimpy kid. I gain a lot from reading. That’s a reason why I like reading. I gain most of my smarts from reading. I read a lot in math and spelling. I’ve also gained skills from reading. I fell cool when I read because you can make up what your characters look like. It is like a movie in your head. You don’t waste the time and rent a movie. You pick a book from the shelf, turn the page and begin the movie.

  21. I ‘m not so psyched about reading but it really distracts me from reality and puts me in the book. I really think I’m good want to read these kinds of books like Percy Jackson and the Champions and the Shiloh series. It’s just I don’t want to read all the time.

  24. I think every kid should be able to read. Reading can take you on adventures and trips. Reading can do a lot for us people. Books can make you smart physically and mentally. I like books like The Little’s and Mouse and The Motorcycle because they are fiction and funny. I choose books by reading the first couple pages to see if the book is to hared or to easy or just right. That’s what my thoughts are about reading. JF

  25. Reading is a way to make me smile, like the sunshine on a summer day, like colors bursting across the sky. Reading frees your mind. Like a bird soaring across the blue sky. You can read anything you want too. Fantasy, fiction, nonfiction, biographies. Laughing, smiling, grinning, and giggling. All the same thing to me. Books start as a couple of words and then bloom out into flowers. They make you not able to pull your eyes away for the tiniest second. Books take you to different worlds. They let you imagine. Like a flower pulling you in pedal by pedal. In books your emotions take over, grinning when their happy and crying when their hurt. Lifting off the ground as you dive into a new book. MM

  27. BI,
You are the most right of all the comments I've read so far. You can go anywhere no matter where you are once you pick up a book and read. If I had to interpret my post differently, yours would be the one I chose.

  29. For me reading is something fun that can feed your knowledge, imagination, and it can teach you valuable life lessons. All you need to do is open a book and read a paragraph then suddenly your sucked right into whole new world of rich text and into a whole new world. Do you now those boring history books? Those boring history books are all you need to change your future. If you want to get your dream job that all deepens on those same old dull history books you might have disliked in your past. But if you want to escape reality you’d probably want to engage into a fiction book. This genera brings you to far away lands, while it teaches you one of the most valuable lessons you’ll ever learn.

  34. I feel reading is not fun. I only like it a little when someone reads to me because it is not as much work. I think reading is boring. Why I do not like reading is because it is boring, to much work, and it’s not fun. But reading is okay with some books. I only like adventure books. But they have to grab me at first. NG

  35. I enjoy and dislike reading. If I have a great book in my hands, I enjoy just imagining where the character is, what he/she looks like, and what they must be going through. If i have a book I am not that familiar with, I will read one or two pages and see if I like it. If I don't, I get a new one.

  36. Reading, for me is a hard thing to describe. I look at a book and see a bunch of pieces of paper put together to therefore get a book, but what is not important is the color of the covers, or the length of the book, whether it is hardcover or paperback. The only thing that matters are the words. Some of my favorite books are The City of Ember or The Gollywhopper games, to name a few. These books hold words that can change the way you look at something forever. These books have made me not want to stop reading. They have changed my view on certain subjects and the much bigger picture. I feel in a different world when I read, and I feel for the character. I like to read about so many things because whether you like it or not chances are you will learn something. I like to read realistic fiction books so that the situations are ones that I could someday be in and therefore I know what to do. I usually read because I feel like it and I want to learn more about the character and the story.

  37. Reading to me is a way that I can get education and have fun at the same by just opening a book. Also reading gives me a different perspective on things from somebody else’s view. I like that every book is different. The characters have their own personality and where the book is set is never the same. The story might be educational or fiction. That’s what I love about reading, that whatever book I read it takes me into a different world. I like that a lot of books has a moral and I learn it. I read for information and for entertainment. I read because I love it. Hw

  42. I'm really thrilled to read your first responses. I truly appreciate that you all feel comfortable expressing your opinions, both positive and negative. I think it is important to have dialogue and this is one opportunity to do that. It makes me happy to see the excitement many of you have for reading. I know that when I was in 5th and 6th grade it was difficult to even put my book down (we know a few people like that don’t we? :). Thanks everyone, on to the next post. . .
